Lucas Hewitt Announces No-Party Campaign for Iowa House District 61
Waterloo native to appear on November ballot as "Nominated by Petition"
WATERLOO, IA — April 9, 2026 — Lucas Hewitt, 34, a Waterloo-born application developer, today announced his campaign for the Iowa House of Representatives in District 61. Hewitt is running without party affiliation as a no-party petition candidate, pledging nonpartisan decision-making, transparent communication and responsive representation.
Hewitt's candidacy is unusual for a state legislative race. Rather than seeking a party's nomination, he qualified for the ballot by collecting signatures from registered voters in the district—a process that will list him on the November ballot as "Nominated by Petition." The District 61 seat is open following Rep. Timi Brown-Powers' candidacy for the Iowa Senate seat left vacant by Sen. Bill Dotzler's retirement.
"It's time for a representative who can listen to and serve the people of Waterloo without pressure from a party leader or partisan influence," said Hewitt. "You can trust that my votes and my decisions will be based solely on whether the legislation placed before me is a net gain for Iowa—not whether it aligns with a particular party platform."
Hewitt was born and raised in Waterloo, where his parents worked in law enforcement and corrections. After graduating from West High, he attended the University of Northern Iowa and the University of Iowa, where he earned a degree in linguistics. During that time he detasseled, worked at Fareway as a courtesy clerk and drove Cambus at the University of Iowa. After graduating, he worked in Christian ministry for several years before becoming a full-time enterprise application developer.
Instead of specific policy outcomes that he himself cannot guarantee, Hewitt's campaign centers on three governing commitments: nonpartisan decision-making, meaning he will evaluate every bill on its merits regardless of which party introduced it; transparent communication, including publishing the reasoning behind each of his votes; and responsive representation, with a pledge to personally read and respond to every constituent message.
"Throughout my life, my friends, classmates and coworkers have been from many different walks of life and worldviews, so I know that listening to one another and working together despite differences is essential to a healthy community," said Hewitt. "That's the attitude I want to bring to the state house—evaluate every piece of legislation on whether it helps the people I represent, be honest about my reasoning and never let a party caucus dictate my votes."
Hewitt will hold a campaign kickoff event at Singlespeed Brewing Company in Waterloo on May 1st from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The event is open to the public, and food and drinks will be provided. Residents interested in learning more about Hewitt's campaign and meeting other supporters are encouraged to attend.
