Lucas Hewitt Earns Endorsements from Republican Supervisor and Forward Party
No party candidate for Iowa House District 61 draws support from different places on the political map
WATERLOO, Iowa - October 2, 2026 - Lucas Hewitt, the no party candidate for Iowa House District 61, has been endorsed by Black Hawk County Supervisor Justin Brandt, a Republican, and by the Young Forwardists Committee of the Forward Party, a national organization of independent and reform-minded voters.
The two endorsements come from different places on the political map but both land on the same point: District 61 should be represented by someone who answers to the people who live here, not to party leaders.
"It's not often we see political candidates bravely run as Independents, but at a time in America when so many of us are fed up with both parties' failure to connect with us, I think it's time we give strong consideration to Lucas Hewitt," said Supervisor Brandt. "When I met Lucas, I felt a calming and authentic passion to raise the bar of politics and a desire to bring both sides together. He has my full endorsement for Iowa House District 61."
"By refusing a party label, pledging to weigh every proposal on its merits, and promising transparency with those he serves, Hewitt models the ideals of independent, community-first representation that the Young Forwardists stand for," the Young Forwardists Committee said in its endorsement. The committee called Hewitt "a powerful advocate for good government and transparent, independent leadership."
Hewitt, 35, was born and raised in Waterloo and works as an enterprise application developer. He is the son of a retired Waterloo police officer and a retired Iowa Department of Corrections probation officer. He is running on three promises: nonpartisan decision-making, weighing every bill on its merits no matter which side it comes from; transparent communication, publishing the reasoning behind every vote; and responsive representation, personally answering every message from a constituent.
"A Republican county supervisor and a national movement of independents won't agree on everything," Hewitt said. "But they can both agree that this district deserves a representative who listens to the people first and foremost, then makes decisions based on the merits. That's how I'll do this job and I'm grateful to them for supporting that."
